The Movie

It's an exploration of my cultural duality as a Cuban American, and what it means to exist between two worlds.

This film confronts how Western and American culture trivializes Cuban culture, reducing it to a romanticized fantasy stripped of depth and meaning. Cuban music and tradition deserve to be honored for what they truly are — not as exotic backdrop, but as a sophisticated, living practice rooted in Yoruba spirituality and Afro-Cuban wisdom. That trivialization is something I resent deeply, and this is my statement against it.

This project was made against impossible odds. Through sacrifice. Through the kind of commitment that meant going without to make something real.

“Have you ever wondered that you are where you're supposed to be?”

You're worthy. You belong. — King Klavé

The Album

This album is an ode to New York. To its multicultural landscape. To a place where the bar for excellence is higher than anywhere else on earth, where the greatest music gets made. I couldn't have made this anywhere else.

The record is his debut album — NPR's 2022 Staff Picks Album of the Year — pressed as a hand-numbered, signed 12" vinyl. Your $40vinyl is that record, and it's your way in.

With Gratitude

I need to honor the people who believed in my vision and artistry when I needed it most. Samir Hall, for his unwavering faith and commitment to my artistry and being. His partner, Michelangelo Wolfe. And most importantly, to both of them for not thinking I'm crazy for wanting to make a film, and for helping me bring it to life. To my directors and cinematographers, Kalani and Isaiah Jimenez Mackson, for giving me the freedom as an artist to be completely myself, and to allow me to push the boundaries and step outside my comfort zone.

“Hey. I'm Amaury Acosta. I'm a Cuban American producer, composer, and musician who takes pride in conceiving unorthodox and wild concepts of art.”

He's played with Iggy Pop, Robert Glasper, Q-Tip, Bilal, and Pedrito Martinez. His debut album fuses jazz, hip-hop, funk, and Afro-Cuban music into something that defies category.

We're marking five years since the creation of this film. We couldn't think of a better time to release it and share it with everybody. And as we move towards September, when I release Sábado Especial, the sequel —

this is just the beginning.
