Public Records

A tri-level vinyl lover's temple on Gowanus where rare records, serious sound systems, and vegan café culture collide under one historic roof.

Brooklyn|233 Butler St, Brooklyn, NY 11217, USA

Public Records is a multi-faceted music and social space built within a historic building on the Gowanus Canal. The building features 3 rooms— a hi-fi record bar showcasing rare record collectors alongside a thoughtfully conceived food and beverage menu, an intimate performance space featuring both live acts and vinyl leaning DJs with a highly ambitious sound system, and an all-day vegan café and magazine shop. Both the bar and sound room feature custom sound systems designed in collaboration between Devon Turnbull of OJAS and Jason Ojeda, formerly of VOID. Each room features custom built Isonoe rotary mixers. Acoustic design was overseen by international engineering firm ARUP. Lighting was designed and built by Brooklyn based Nitemind. Music programming is helmed by partner and acclaimed artist / producer Francis Harris, founder of local record labels Scissor & Thread and Kingdoms. Hospitality is overseen by partner Erik VanderWal, formerly with Keith McNally and Think Food Group. Design and creative direction is overseen by partner Shane Davis, founder of hospitality strategy firm whitebox collective.
